When I spoke with James Knox at my solo exhibition in Scotland we talked about 'Linking Lucy' in the collection and I explained the idea behind it. I forgot that he asked me to pass on this information to Fleming as back up for the work. Here it is now, I hope that it will be useful sometime. Title: Linking Lucy My work has often been influenced by African art having spent time there as a child and my Prof. in Berlin, Georg Baselitz also has an important collection of African art. I believe his work took me back to my own childhood memories. At the time I was making the painting I read about what was guessed to be the remains of a woman, over 3 million years old, discovered in Ethiopia. She was the most ancient early human and thought to be the ‘Missing Link’ in evolution between ape and man and was called ‘Lucy'. This fascinated me. My 'Linking Lucy' has dynamic upward lines from the body which contains many small figures and the legs are in the form of an oval link. Best wishes, Margaret PS Just to say I will be on a trip from this Friday until the end of July and mobile phone and internet connection will be unreliable. Thank you also for noticing the image discrepancy with Linking Lucy – this must be a sizing issue, as then the image is clicked on it comes up to full size, but is cropped in the record. I haven’t noticed this with any other images, so I’ll be in touch with our developer about it. Can I just check with you, whether it is Linking Lucy or Linking Lucie – as we have Lucie on our database, but I notice that you spell it Lucy. We don’t at the moment, purely because we don’t have contact details for all of the artists in the collection. This exercise is however quickly rectifying that, and so we will start to! Just a couple of observations about the images of my work included in the record. The print ‘Dreamings' should be portrait format, not landscape as shown, with the larger of the two figures at the bottom. About 'Linking Lucy' I’d prefer if the complete image is included in the record. I’d be grateful if these changes can be made. Unfortunate that the gallery has closed, do you inform the artists when their work is loaned/exhibited? Your questions are very welcome. Bridgeman have agreed to grant us a licence for works registered with them, so I will include Linking Lucy, but as you say, you are the copyright holder. The individual record will contain title, artist, date, medium and subject, dimensions, object number and marks – I have attached a screenshot of one of your works individual records so you can see. The gallery has indeed closed, and we have become a purely lending collection. We loan to museums and curate exhibitions of our own in borrowed space as such. Many thanks again for granting permission. As you ask I give my permission to use the artwork. However as to 'Linking Lucy’, 1989, (attached) I should mention that it was registered with the Bridgeman Art Library very many years ago although I remain the copyright owner. Perhaps you know if this might have a bearing on your request. With reference to credit lines, '©Margaret Hunter' or '©The artist’ but I’m agreeable for you to use whichever is usual practice for the Fleming collection. I would like to ask what information the individual record will contain and I’d be pleased to see the the images of my work on the web site. A final question: During a meeting with James Knox at my solo exhibition two years ago in Scotland, he told me that the wonderful Fleming Art Gallery in Mayfair, where I’d also participated in an exhibition, had closed. Does the Fleming Collection have gallery space within the present address? I’m sure you have many artists to work your way through so enough questions from me now! My name is Brittany Harbidge, and I am the Collections and Website Manager for the Fleming Collection. Forgive me if you already know this as the Fleming Collection is listed on the website as one of the collections your work is in, but for a brief overview, the Fleming Collection has the finest collection of Scottish art outside museums and is a registered charity, which promotes Scottish art and creativity outside Scotland. We are launching a new website in the next few months, which will include our entire collection listed online for the first time. Each object will have an individual record, and we are of course hoping to include as many images as possible. I am therefore seeking permission to use the images we have of your work in the collection: Dreamings 1/30, 2002 Linking Lucie, 1989 Study No. 5, 29th May, 2004 If permission is granted, please could you let me know your preferred credit line. We hope you look on our request favourably. As a lending collection, we are hoping our new website will open up the work of Scottish artists to a wider audience. If you have any questions, or would like to see the images in situ on the website, please do let me know.
